MUMBAI: City police have busted a gang of six, including an assistant police inspector (API), who tried to dupe a builder under the pretext of depositing old currency notes totalling Rs 3 crore. While Santacruz police have arrested three persons, including a home guards constable, the police are hunting for two more persons who impersonated as bank staffers. The API’s name has been withheld for now; he is under the scanner.<\/p>\n
Santacruz police on Thursday arrested Mahesh Sawant, Rahit Maruti and Mahesh Shetty under Indian Penal Code sections for cheating. While Sawant is a constable attached to the home guards, Shetty runs a canteen. Maruti is allegedly their aide. The complainant is builder Sanjay Naik. “Sawant who is known to Naik promised to get his old notes exchanged with the help of a bank manager. He told Naik he would get the amount deposited into a non-performing account, trans fer it into another account through RTGS and then into Naik’s account,” said an officer.<\/p>\n
Naik arrived by car near a multinational bank, as was decided on Tuesday . As per Sa want’s directions, Naik handed over three bags containing the cash to Sawant and his four associates. He told the police that the API in uniform was seated in a car outside the gate.<\/p>\n
As Sawant and his aides approached the bank with bags of cash, the API got off the car.The five fled with the bags on seeing him,” said an officer. Naik, who was standing at a distance, fled too. After waiting for two days, the builder approached Santacruz police, said Deven Bharti, joint commissioner of police (law and order). “With technical help, we arrested three accused and are looking for others. Two of them posed as bankers,” said Shantanu Pawar, senior inspector, Santacruz police.
