A year after the government included a category to count madrasas under its Unified District Information System for Education (U-DISE), latest figures show only a marginal increase from last year \u2013 there are only 78 recognised and 67 unrecognised madrasas across the state \u2013 as compared to 56 recognised and 76 unrecognised madrassas last year.<\/p>\n
Last year, the government included religious schools including madrasas, Vedic and Sanskrit schools in its survey, hoping to encourage the teaching of subjects such as science, mathematics, social sciences and languages in madrasas, even as these institutes continued to impart religious-based education. However, the going has been slow as these institutes have not been able to bring themselves up to par with \u2018formal\u2019 schools.<\/p>\n
However, experts say that thousands of madrasas that have not been included in the survey. \u201cThere are at least 1,000 madrasas that have not been included in the survey. Only madrasas recognised by the WAQF board have been included. The ones registered with the charity commissioner have not been recognised. The official figures are of no use,\u201d said Maulana Syed Athar Ali, Muslim Personal Law Board member and general secretary of the Madrassa Darul Uloom Mohammadiyam, Mohammed Ali Road.<\/p>\n
An official from the state education department explained why this was the case. \u201cOnly those madrasas that had applied for the state government\u2019s madrasa modernisation programmes and have agreed to teach the four formal subjects of mathematics, science, languages and social sciences, have been included in the category of recognised madrasas.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, some in the institutes said the state has made no effort to bring them into the fold. Mufti Manzur Ziyaee, founder, Darul Uloom Faizane Raza madrasa, Goregaon, said, \u201cEven those who are teaching all the subjects and are also training students in various skills are not considered to be a part of the mainstream education. If the government is not having a dialogue with us, what is the use of the category in its survey?\u201d The Darul Uloom Faizane Raza madrasa also imparts civil service coaching to students.<\/p>\n
Shocking statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n The U-DISE survey also revealed some shocking statistics: 607 Mumbai schools had no computers, more than 150 schools did not have a toilet for boys while more than 70 schools in the city had no toilets for girls.
